Why Chewing Sugar-Free Gum After Meals Helps Protect Your Teeth

Did you know?

Chewing sugar-free gum for about 20 minutes after a meal can actually help protect your teeth from decay. Sounds simple, right? But there’s solid science behind it. That extra chewing boosts saliva flow, which helps rinse away food particles, neutralize acids, and even bring in minerals that strengthen enamel.

When you chew sugarless gum you increase the flow of saliva, which washes away food and other debris, neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and provides disease-fighting substances throughout the mouth. Another added benefit of Increased saliva flow is that it also carries with it more calcium and phosphate to help strengthen tooth enamel. Chewing gum with sugar in it also increases saliva flow, but it also contains sugar which is used by plaque bacteria to produce decay-causing acids. That is why we suggest sugar-free gum that is sweetened by non-cavity causing sweeteners such as aspartame, xylitol, sorbitol or mannitol.

Just a heads-up: While sugarless gum is a helpful add-on, it’s not a replacement for brushing, flossing, or regular cleanings. Dr. Ali Yazback always recommends sticking with the basics: brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and seeing us in the office for cleanings and checkups.

We also recommend regular dental cleanings and exams at our office
