So what is an implant, and how does it actually work? ## A bit of history Early attempts at tooth replacement date back thousands of years. The real breakthrough came in the 1960s, when researchers found that bone does not reject titanium. Instead it grows tightly around the metal, forming a secure, lasting connection. That process, called osseointegration, is what makes modern implants both possible and reliable. ## What an implant actually is An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement for a missing tooth root. Over several months, bone fuses to the post and creates a solid foundation. Once it has healed, a custom crown, bridge, or denture is attached, restoring both function and appearance. The process usually goes in three stages: - 01Placement. The titanium post is inserted into the jawbone under local anesthesia, with minimal discomfort. - 02Healing and osseointegration. Over the next two to six months, bone grows around the implant. This is the phase where its stability is built. - 03Restoration. Even where bone loss has occurred, a graft can often make an implant possible. Factors like smoking, diabetes, or untreated gum disease can affect healing, so a thorough evaluation comes first. ## The long-term payoff Unlike a bridge or denture, an implant does not lean on the neighboring teeth for support, which helps preserve your overall dental structure. It also prevents the jawbone deterioration that often follows tooth loss.
